Many people want to learn Japanese by watching Anime or J-Dramas, but one of the big problems that most run into with this method of learning is that they can’t find a J-Drama that is appropriate to their level.
Enter Nihonjin no shiranai nihongo – 日本人の知らない日本語
or “Japanese that the Japanese Don’t Know”
This show is designed to help you learn Japanese and gives a lot of cultural background into lesser known words that you would encounter every day but never stop to think and ask about. For example: Can you tell me what the word is for the strainer ladel used to drain ramen noodles of their water?
Hosted by an overly dramatic lead – the show focuses on a Japanese teacher, teaching a class of Japanese speaking foreigners who already speak intermediate Japanese. Some of the actors on the show are definitely Japanese speakers first, and actors second, but that doesn’t stop this show from not only being informative, but also entertaining. I reccommend watching the show in subtitles first and then switching to the non-subbed version.
